32 I HiKoPod I Space Wars in Berlin. The S-Bahn and U-Bahn in the Cold War – With Hannah Siegrist

The red and yellow trains of the Berlin S-Bahn are an iconic part of today’s cityscape of the German capital. However, during the Cold War and the division of Berlin the railway systems themselves were divided between East and West while at the same time also transcending the borders within the city. It therefore played a critical role in the construction of space, the establishment of the two politically and culturally opposed halves of the city and future urban planning in Berlin.

In this podcast, Hannah Siegrist, who received the HiKo_21 - Young Scientists Award for her project in 2024, illustrates how in the so-called ‚Space Wars‘ the Berlin railway infrastructure became one of the major assets in the ideological struggle between East and West. She describes the major protagonists involved as well as taking a look at the consequences which are still visible in the reunified city today. Die roten und gelben Wagen der Berliner S-Bahn sind heute aus Stadtbild der deutschen Hauptstadt nicht mehr wegzudenken. Während des Kalten Krieges und der Teilung Berlins waren die Bahnlinien selbst jedoch zwischen Ost und West geteilt, gleichzeitig aber auch Überwinder dieser Grenze innerhalb der Stadt. Sie spielten daher eine entscheidende Rolle bei der Konstruktion von Raum, der Etablierung der beiden politisch und kulturell gegensätzlichen Stadthälften und der zukünftigen Stadtplanung in Berlin.

Hannah Siegrist, die 2024 für ihr Projekt mit dem HiKo_21-Nachwuchspreis ausgezeichnet wurde, zeigt in diesem Podcast, wie die Berliner Schieneninfrastruktur in den so genannten ‚Space Wars‘ zu einem der wichtigsten Mittel im ideologischen Kampf zwischen Ost und West wurde. Sie beschreibt die wichtigsten beteiligten Protagonisten und wirft einen Blick auf die Folgen, die bis heute in der wiedervereinigten Stadt sichtbar sind.
